Why Homeschooling Is Great
71The magic of homeschooling is in your child. This is one thing that Maria Montessori, Piaget, John Holt, Glenn Doman and the Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential in Pennsylvania all knew or discovered. They understood that from the moment that a child is born he or she has a strong desire to learn and so if you follow their lead, give them a rich environment, provide them with lots of time and attention and encourage them, then they will exceed all of your expectations when it comes to learning.
Since we are a product of the schools we tend to make the same mistakes that they have made. These schools arrange for children to fail by catching children's mistakes, not their successes. They set children up so that no matter what they do they lose.
Children are born with a love of learning. However, when they are faced with repeated testing and the flaunting of their failures children's desire to learn is stifled. After all, there is one sure way in which you can make sure that a child hates something: point out all of the ways in which the child does not measure up or all of the ways in which the child falls short of perfection. On the other hand, if you want to see a child love doing something and be motivated to do it repeatedly, then point out how good of job the child is doing and celebrate their victories. Sometimes this means that you will have to arrange for your child to win honestly but that can be done through homeschooling. The point is this though: the more frequently that your child feels like a winner, the more successful your child will be. Why? It is because success is the greatest motivator known to humankind.
Take a moment to think about it and you will see that most of us avoid doing those things that we do not do well. On the other hand, whenever we do something well and someone takes notice and congratulates us, we believe that we are good at it and so we want to do it again and again.
So, if you want to know the secret to motivating your children to do well, it is in telling them how great you think they are and just how much you love them. Within them there is a special kind of magic. It is the potential for them to achieve whatever their heart desires in their lifetime. This can be developed through encouragement, love and trust.
