Why parents homeschool
According to The Wall Street Journal there are at least 2.5 million homeschool children in this country today. This number will increase by 15% to 20% per year, making homeschooling the fastest growing educational alternative in the United States today.
There are a variety of reasons why families choose to homeschool their children, but usually it is because of their educational philosophy or religious beliefs. Of course, there are also some families who homeschool their children in order to rescue them from the de-socialization (i.e. drugs, gangs and other such risky behavior) that is happening in the schools today.
Many families have also chosen to custom-tailor a curriculum that best suits their child's needs, interests and learning styles. This is why so many children, including those who have been labeled "learning disabled," flourish whenever they are homeschooled. In fact, the latest studies have shown that homeschooling is a lot more successful than public schooling. For this reason a lot of college admissions panels have adapted their entrance requirements to allow for those who are homeschooled. It is interesting to note that major universities such as Harvard, Yale, Stanford and the U.S. Military academies have all accepted homeschoolers.
At one point in time, all of this had to take place underground because homeschooling was illegal. As such, you can easily see that homeschooling really has come a long way since it has become legalized. Now, it is very easy to access. While this educational choice may not be the right choice for every family, it is definitely a very workable educational alternative for a lot of families today.
If you are one of the many people who are intrigued by this educational alternative, there are a lot of different places where you can find information and help with homeschooling your children. Numerous books have been published and can be borrowed from your local library. There are also a wide variety of magazines that you can peruse and choose to subscribe to.
