How To Homeschool

There is more to homeschooling than schoolwork

Those of you who are already homeschooling your child, or have at least done a lot of thinking and researching this, then you probably already know the benefits of homeschooling your child. For those of you who are just beginning to research or think about homeschooling, the benefits include having more control over the curriculum that you use, being able to customize lessons to meet your child's personal learning style, and avoiding both the pressures and the dangers that are present in the public schools today.

One thing that you, as a parent, need to think about is the fact that your children are going to need to have some friends. Most of the time these friends are made in the school, but there are lots of other ways in which your child can make friends. You also need to know that if your child is homeschooled then other children may pick on them. As a parent, you must overcome these challenges so that your child will have a positive social life and be able to function along side of children their own age. You are also responsible for finding your child some friends. This is just as important as schoolwork is.

Here are some tips to help you find positive social interactions for your child:

1.Start by getting to know the neighborhood that you live in. Look around and see how many children that are the same age as your child live near you. If you do not know these parents, then it is time that you get to know them. Let these parents know that you would like to have a play date for. Since you are the one who is setting up the play date, you will also need to organize the play date. Make sure that you do something that you know both children will enjoy. Of course, you can also offer to babysit the other child for just a few hours.

2.Outside of school, sports and other extracurricular activities are the best environment for your child to form deep rooted friendships. This is because your child will spend a lot of time doing these things, regardless of whether it is training for a sport or doing organized activities with these children. You will also get a chance to get to know the parents whenever you are at these meetings or practices. Besides sports, your child can also try Boy or Girl Scouts or get involved with your church.

Of course, it is important to make sure that your child is exposed to the same things that other children are exposed to. Of course, you want to protect your child from dangerous situations you also do not want your child to seem "weird" to other children. So, you are going to need to allow your child to have some radio, television and Internet privileges in order that they can get to know the hot bands, cool TV shows and whatever else may currently be in style. If your child is not exposed to mainstream culture, then they will not know how to talk or act around other children. This will make it even harder for them to relate to other children who are the same age.
