Choosing Homeschool Curriculum

How to choose homeschool curriculum

Whenever you choose the curriculum that you are going to use, you will need to keep in mind how your child learns best. This will take some experimenting first. However, you always have the opportunity to change things if they are not working for you or your child. Sometimes all that is required is a small change, but sometimes you are going to have to make a big choice. Regardless as to whether you are choosing to allow more time for activities or you are choosing to stop using some curriculum the choice is all yours.

As a homeschool parent you have the choice between 3 types of curriculum. These include:

1.There are complete curriculum packages available that include all of the materials that you need for whatever grade your child is in. Some of the things that may come with this type of a curriculum include teacher guides, text books, work books, supplemental reading material, study sheets, pre-tests, exams, activities and experiments, videos, audios, Internet support, a certified teacher supporter, report cards and anything else that they believe you may need. Of course, not every supplier will give you all of these things, so you are going to need to read the fine print carefully. This can be advantageous because it is easy to use, structured, meets legal requirements and replicates the school model. However, it can also be disadvantageous because of how much it can cost, there is lots of work involved with it for both you and your child, your child may not like this program and it does not allow for much imagination or freedom.

2.You can buy curriculum for each subject from different curriculum vendors. This works best whenever you find that you like a certain curriculum package for a specific subject but not for anything else. A lot of parents find that this works best for them. For instance, they might use A Beka for math and Calvert for science. This can be advantageous because it allows you to teach to your child's learning style and is a certified resource but yet you have more freedom. However, there are some drawbacks to this method too. One of these is that you will have to do more independent research in order to determine what modules you will need. It also costs a lot more since you are purchasing individual components instead of the entire curriculum package. Unfortunately, you are also left on your own now to meet your state's legal requirements as they now become your responsibility.

3.You can create your own curriculum. Choosing to create your own curriculum means that you get to decide on the methods, books,

4.schedule and anything else that is related to your child's education. Here you can choose to use a traditional method in 1 area and a nontraditional method in another area. However, as a parent, you are going to have to trust in your instincts when it comes to determining what your child needs. Another benefit of this method of homeschooling is that it is less expensive. You should know though that you will have to be prepared for making the wrong decision. This method also leaves you on your own for meeting your state's legal requirements. Of course, this method has a lot less structure to it as well.
